The events of 911 changed that. The tragedy was a powerful reminder that life is short and nothing should be put off until tomorrow. It became the catalyst for turning the concept into a reality.
Finally, the store began to take shape. Unusual, unique, exceptional items were found all over the country. As more people heard about the concept, excitement began to build. But even after the decision was made to open by the end of 2005, there was still no name for “The Store.”

And that is when a random flyer arrived in the mail, featuring a pergola. Intrigued, we looked it up in a dictionary. There we discovered that “a pergola is an arbor or a passageway of columns supporting a roof of trelliswork on which climbing plants are trained to grow.” The name conjured images of southern hospitality, a place to relax, reflect and recharge. It was just the word to capture the essence of “The Store.”
Almost. The word looked good but the way it sounded just lacked… something.
So, with a creative accent mark, “The Store” became Pergóla. This accent was just the flair and originality the store needed. And when we found 976 Piedmont Avenue, Pergóla had a home as well. On November 16, 2005, Pergóla opened its doors to its first customer, good friend, Mike McCoy. Since that day, Pergóla has been fortunate to welcome many new friends through its doors.
Today, Pergóla strives to bring you an ever-changing inventory of unique items for gift giving and home decorating that keeps you coming back. We hope you enjoy our on-line store and we look forward to seeing you at Pergóla.
